Help Identify this Muncie 4 Speed
I was told this is a M22, Can anyone tell by these pics?
Thanks,
If it is a M22 it does not have the Famous Whine... Front seal is leaking so Im going to have it gone through and have M22 Gears installed.
What should I expect to pay ballpark for them to install new gears and get it all sealed up?
Any advice on M22 W vs. Close Ratio?
Its going in a 68 Big Block Car with prolly 425HP. 373 rear gear.
Thanks!
Michael

Case number indicates:
Casting: 3925661 Years: 1970 - 1974 Ratios: M20 2.52 1st , M21 2.20 1st, M22 2.20 1st
I would doubt this to be a numbers matching transmission. But check and see if the numbers look correct. Today a few companies make newer model 4 speed transmission and heavier duty built cases. I ordered one from a company in the state of Washington and it is perfect so far. Autologic case new Italian gear set heavy duty output shaft 1 inch pin. If I had to do it over I would get a Tremmec 5 speed and change to a hydraulic clutch.. But that's me.
Now down to the difference in ratios, the first gear ratio is what helps you get going. The M20 had a low first gear 2.52 versus the M22 at 2.20. This really can effect take off and how much you have to slip the clutch and with the 3.73 rear your kind of in the middle. Either ratio would work you just have to realize the take off is all your going to effect the final drive ratio is 1 to 1 in all the M series transmissions.
