I started installing the alternator in my '69 "barn find" and found there is no voltage regulator. There is suppose to be one, right? Also no wires are run to where the regulator is suppose to be (drivers side radiator support). There is a single wire plugin at the altenator, but other than that, nothing. No ground or battery wire. Could the regulator be in the altenator? (or is this just wishful thinking?)

 

Sounds like yours has been converted over to a one wire internal regulator alternator. Look at the plug receptacle on the alternator. Rectangle shaped means internal regulator, square shaped means external regulator style.

 

The car came with 2 altenators. An old one (painted black)with a rectangle 2 prong plug-in on the side and a new one with a square 2 prong plug-in on the back. Guess I'll put the old one on and see if it works. I just love redoing my work.

 

by the way, where do the other wires go on the altenator---a small stud (no. 10)with a nut and a large (1/4) bolt.

 

Your old external regulator alternator (square plug in back) isn't going to work, since the original regulator and wiring have been removed. The single wire goes to the output stud on the alternator. That will be all there is to it, assuming that black alternator you have is a "one wire" style. Otherwise you'll need to jump an "exciter" wire from the alternator output stud to the lower (or right one if looking from the back side) plug-in terminal on the alternator.
