Can anyone tell me what this electrical item is called? It appears to be some sort of power relay, located under the voltage regulator on the radiator support panel, on my '67 Camaro. For example, a heavy power lead comes off of it and goes to the A/C unit.

The connections are corroded, and I'd like to replace this unit, but I have no idea as to what it is actually called. Can anybody identify it for me and/or tell me what it is called?

 

Horn relay. It's also used as a main power junction block.

 

That's what I had first thought it might be, but I ordered a replacement horn relay from Eckler's, and it looks nothing like this unit. The replacement horn relay has a two-wire plug on it, as well as two screw terminals, while the original unit has no such provision for a plug, only four screw terminals. In your picture, I see blue and red plastic insulation on the slide connectors. Those aren't factory connectors, and someone wired in a universal horn relay. My relay has two plugs and two screw terminals, as should yours. The relay you bought is the right one, you'll just need to redo the wire connectors accordingly. Let me know if you need help deciphering which wires go to where on the new relay.

 

Yes, if there is any information you could provide as to which wire(s) go to which input on the new (stock) relay, that would be much appreciated. I have the Chilton's manual on this car, including the schematic, but it won't show to which input each color-coded wire should go...

FYI, I was able to identify for sure that this unit IS the Horn Relay, as you'd suggested (although a "universal/aftermarket" unit).

There are a total of 5 contacts on the new OEM relay, numbered only as "1" through "5", with two of them being inside a plastic surround, as if a plug was meant to plug into it. The other three are more out in the open.

My existing universal unit has 4 wires going to it, with two wires doubled-up on the center terminal, and single wires going to each of the other terminals, for a total of 4 wires connected to 3 terminals. I have no idea what each wire is for, nor are there any markings on the universal relay that might be of help.

Any idea as to how to tell what each of these wires do, and then to which connector of the OEM relay each wire should go to?

 

Crap, I forgot about this. I'll trace the wires on my car and let you know.
Diagrams don't work well for showing exactly where the wires come out and go to.
