Default Hurst shifter boot

I need to put the chrome trim ring around my Hurst shifter boot. It is a 4 speed. Questions is, does the boot and ring sit on top of the carpet or does the carpet go in the trim ring grove if they have one. Then all you do is use 4 srews and go into the floor. Is this correct. Thanks, Jerod

The rubber boot is to seal out the elements, so it goes on the tunnel first. Otherwise the carpet would/could get wet, soak through and ruin the carpet and floor inside the car. Then the carpet on top of the boot, and the chrome trim ring trims it all out.
