Default Drivetrain matching/identification

I have a non matching motor and tranny in my 69. The rear however, is original (stamping is all correct anyhow). Given the non original motor/tranny, I can't see how a correctly stamped rear was sought out after the fact on this car. The rear is a 12 bolt 3.55 posi. I have some old dealer pamphlets that have drivetrain tables. There are only 2 motors that could have come with this rear. A 255 hp 350 and a 300hp ss 350 engine. This is an x-11 car with a valid rs option. Anyone have a clue as to how the motors may have differed in a way that could be seen without the motor in the car? Like, different fuel line locations or something of that nature.
