cowl removal
After removing the cowl vent cover and the windshield to replace the dash top panel I discovered that the cowl panel is rusting. Obviously I will have to take both of the fenders back off and cut it out before welding in the new piece. Just wanted to ask if anyone has done this before and do they have any advice before I start.
At first I thought that your post was kind of obvious, but after a while it occurred to me that I may not understand what you mean. Are you saying that I should remove the panel carefully and not take any metal off that I don't have to or are you saying that I should not replace the whole panel and just try to replace the parts of the panel that are rusted? Either way it could be good advice, just not sure which and why. Can you explain? Also, why does it mater that you normally can't see it?
There is no need to replace the whole panel unless rotted beyond repair. If rust can be cut out and new metal replaced then that is the better way. Keep in mind that replacement panels never fit the way that originals do, which is why you shouldnt remove the whole thing. I just had mine on a rotisserie and I cussed many times trying to get panels to fit when I could have reduced the amount of metal I cut out. You can see my project on my profile page.
I removed everything today so that I can get to it and after I got both fenders off I can see that you are right and I don't want to cut the whole thing out. I would love to be able to see your pics, but I will have to wait as I am still a newbie. Unless an admin takes pity on me and lets me have access. Thanks for the advice. I have the feeling that you may have saved me hours of work and frustration.
