Can someone decode my cowl tag?
Hi all...i bought a 1969 camaro a few years back, was thinking of selling it,upon further inspection the dash pad vin doesnt match the cowl tag. The previous owner bought it as built, which is kinda dressed like a Z28...but i doubt it really is...especially for the price i paid and missing original items...anyway...did someone monkey with dash vin? Or cowl vin? And which is correct for the car?? Im not advertising it as a Z28..

VIN plate states it started life as a 6-cyl XX3XX9, also Fisher body tag sequence number 20XXX is way beyond VIN number.
Could be a fake tag. Read up at Camaro Research Group as they break down the tag coding and VIN-to-Sequence relationship.

Yep, looks a little odd just because of the grinding on the trim tag. I'm not sure if it is a fake anything tho...
CRG decodes the VIN as:
1: Chevrolet
2: Camaro
3: 6-cyl engine
37: coupe
9: 1969 model year
N: manufactured at Norwood, OH
562954: the serial number, and this is consistent with a Norwood manufactured vehicle (starts with "5")
The trim tag decodes as a 1969 Camaro coupe with standard interior, built in Norwood, with production code 295460, standard bucket seats in ivory/black, built in the second week of December, monotone paint in azure turquiose, non SS and non Z28.
If the "4" (69 12437) and the production number on the trim tag are what's concerning you, CRG explains these differences well and they won't agree so no worries.
Maybe I just related info you already knew, but these numbers can't definitively say its a fake anything. If there is a Z28 badge on it, someone is playing the game...otherwise you have a 69 coupe on which to build a legend.
Just remember; tags can only say what it was and not what it is.
