I have someone willing to trade me a 68 RS coupe for my 02 Mustang GT convertible. The Camaro has had almost all of the sheet metal replaced. Front clip is all new. doors, quarters, trunk lid, trunk pan, floor pans have all been replaced. Car comes with a numbers matching 327 engine and powerglide transmission. Neither the engine or transmission are installed in the car currently. The interior has been completely removed from the car as well. The car has been converted to have front and rear disc brakes. No glass is currently installed in the car. The owner has boxes of many parts laying on pallets in his garage.

 

You didn't say how many miles your GT has, which affects it's value. In my area, one with 150k miles could be had for $5k or less. Or one with miles in the 70's for $8k or less. If yours falls anywhere in there, then the Camaro is a good trade, provided the body panels were installed by someone knowledgeable. There's a ton of value to what was already done to the body, as long as it was done right. Check the fit and gaps between fenders, doors, hood, and trunk lid.

 

The Mustang has 85k miles on it. It is garage kept and does come with some extras the most notable is an extra set of wheels and tires.

As far as the body the gapping isnt right on it right now. But i dont think the guy tried to line everything up. It looked like he just threw the new front clip on the car and the driver door has a large gap between the quarter and the door. I figured some adjustments probably needed to be made with that though.

 

So it sounds like it just has the sheet metal hung and needs adjusting and setup.. If your not a body guy figure just to get things right will run about 8 to 10 hours at a professional shop, depending how picky you are. Set aside another 10k for paint and remaining body work prep.. If you can not reassemble it figure that will set you back about 3k for wiring, 2k for interior and 2k for drive train. If your particular about things figure in about 3k for minor adjustments.. All this is based on you have everything you need to put it back together. Figure about 5k for all the things you forgot about... So do you have the time the money and the patience to deal with the project.... Then ask yourself is it worth giving up a running car for this..? To be honest if you don't love the idea of building a first gen then run away. For me its a no brainer I would do it... But I love the first gen and would make the time money and patience for it...

 

I have actually done a good bit of body work myself. While I have never painted an entire car, I did do a rear end conversion on a newer car a couple years back which involved painting the back of the car and have painted a couple sport bikes for friends. I dont know that I would do all of the painting but I could handle the prep work.

I have 3 other cars so I dont mind not having this running car as it has literally sat for the last 2 years. I reinstated the insurance on the car Sunday to drive it to look at the Camaro. I am also pretty sure that I could put everything back together. Things that I noticed were missing when looking at the car included the gas tank and drive shaft. The guy had told me everything was there but those are major things to be missing so who knows what else is gone. I know the interior is there....but it was shot.

I want a first gen Camaro and I particularly have a thing for the 68 RS's. I have also been looking for a project. I listed my car for sale so I could pick up some kind of old school chevy. These Camaro's seem to sell all over the place so I have been having issues coming up with the value for this.
