396 engine question
I picked up a chevelle and I was going to use the motor in my Camaro. I took the valve covers off and the heads say hi perf in them has some numbers on the heads saying b-18-9 on both heads. what are these. its a complete original motor. thanks. the block also says hi perf on the back and pass below it. has the snow flake intake and everything.
Could be more than what you think - snowflake is trademark for Winters alum intake.
You should copy down all info from deck pad in front of pass head and research its origin.
Feb 18, 1969 build date and all had PASS on block.
If heads have square intake ports, could have a sleeper engine.
Engine code & partial VIN will tell you where it came from.
nastyz/28.com for decoding

yes heads have square intake ports. I looked on ebay and they call these triangle heads or something like theat. they are selling for a lot I know that much. also the intake numbers are 3933163

The intake is original GM from the Winters foundry.
Heads are square port and are for high rpm.
You should get the engine code from the pass side deck in front of cylinder head and find out the engine you have.

Is this a 69 Chevelle you picked up? What kind of condition is it in? If the engine is numbers matching to the Chevelle, and the car is in decent condition, then you have a valuable SS on your hands. The last thing I would do then is cannibalize the car and kill it's value, for the sake of using the engine. Of course, if the thing is a rusted out hulk, that's a different story.
no the chevelle is in good shape its a reall ss factory Monaco orange on the tag. the motor has been decked so I can bearely see some of the numbers. the other thing is right above the oil filter is a thing like a hose or something goes there. never seen anything like it.im kinda new to all this old car stuff. ive been around them a lot but never looked at the small details.
Can you make out any of the numbers to see if they match the VIN of the car? It would be a shame to dismantle an SS Chevelle.
The hole above the filter is for the oil pressure switch for the gauge. To the right and up from there is a hole for the clutch linkage pivot ball.

Maybe post some pictures of the Chevelle and other points you are asking about?
With decked block, its going to be hard to confirm original engine, but, above the oil filter, on the pad of block, where the bellhousing bolts onto, the little 3/4 inch by 2 inch vertical surface, may have the partial VIN stamped on the surface. Could be saving grace here.

"CF" isn't a big block code, perhaps it's CE? That stands for "Chevrolet Engine", which means a service replacement engine, or one sold over the counter.
