1968 camaro overheating with 454 big block
Hi Guys
I installed a new rebuilt 454 motor that was bored .030 over.
Have 10 1/2 to 1 compression pistons, new ss valves on my original heads.
I live in central Florida where it gets very hot down here in the summer.
I have a 180 degree thermostat installed 50/50 mix of anitifreez and royal purple water wetter. I have a 4 row be cool radiator core measures 22 across by 22" down , i have a 16" stal electric fan mounted on an aluminmum shroud.
Normal running in no traffic keeps temps between 180 and 195.
But when in stop and go traffic and its 90 plus degrees the temp goes up to 210 and sometimes a little higher like 220 where i pull over and let it cool down.
msd ignition timing set at 38 while on the dyno.
I also have ceramic coated heeders and yes it gets real hot under that hood.
again only happens in real heavy traffic with temps above 90 degrees.
I just ordered a new syclone 16" electric fan from summit to install it has a 2500 cfm rating i am hoping this will help.
whats your advice ?????

get rid of the electric fan. I tried 2 10" electric fans with a shroud and it wouldn't cool
went with a mechanical fan and now it stays at 180*

I would recommend a Mr. Gasket 165 degree thermostat. I tried several Oreilly brand thermostats and they all failed. Mr. Gasket is extremely well made in comparison to all the other China ones I tried, I run a stroker motor with a clutch fan and the same radiator you do and typically I run 175 degrees all the time. It does raise to 185-200 when stopped for a period of time but as soon as I take off again the temp drops right back down.
