Default 1968 12 bolt rear question

Hi, new to the site. I just purchased a 68 convertible for restoration. First convertible I ever owned. I am looking for a 12 bolt rear housing. Someone told me that the coupe and convertible used different 12 bolt housings. Is this true or can I use any first gen housing for it.

Never heard that one before. There were different axle codes for the 12 bolt, depending upon the gear ratio it was equipped with and whether it was an open diff or posi.
But any axle assembly from a 1st gen, as well as from a 68-72 Nova will fit.

'67's had monoleaf springs, so a short height spring perch will be present.
Some low performance '68's had monoleaf perches as well.
A few '69's had monoleaf perches as well, but more into multi-leaf perches.
Twelve bolts could be had in all depending upon ratio slected, posi optional, As Camaro stated, code will tell of born with option.

in 68 all 12 bolt cars were multi leaf cars. 67 housings will have shock mounts on the same side on each end, while 68-69 are staggered.

You might consider a moser 12 bolt. I was looking for a year for a used twelve bolt, then there is no gaurantee you will not have to rebuild it. Moser makes it easy, bolt in with a menu of what you want. About the same price. Just saying ..... (I still have my 10 bolt.)
