Default Tuners

I'm an 70's drag racer with a new retirement present, 2010 SS L99 with an Air Induction system and SLP exhaust. Wondering whats with a tuner reprogram and what to expect. Drive it to FL for winter. Can reprogram be returned to factory specs. Am a retired GM service Director.

You can go to a shop for a tune - and with the new systems, it's literally plug-and-play. The shop can usually upload a new tune into your car's computer and have you on the road in a few hours. As for "returning to stock tune", that can be done easily too.

And as your car only has an exhaust as a mod, you might want to try out any of the handheld jobs first if you feel skittish about travelling to a shop. Diablosport/Superchips come to mind, and you can tweak it yourself (to a limited extent vs. the more formal dyno tunes) in your own garage/driveway. That way, you can restore to stock in minutes if you have to take it in and not worrying about getting it back to the shop to reflash a stock tune. Also, the limited number of mods won't really outstrip the limted tune ability of the handheld.

I had a Diablosport tuner for my Monaro clone, and it was helpful in reading/erasing the stupid CEL's in some cases, as well as slightly tweaking the fuel/spark tables and radiator fan controls. Nothing major, and I've since moved on to bigger and better things.
