Ive read a few articles about the 6 speed, and from what I read it says when you take it easy on the pedal when you shift from 1st you have to shift to 4th, that the computer wont let you shift to 2nd or third. Im going to look at a 96 z28 6speed tommarow and im hoping on getting it if it checks out. I was wondering if there is anyway around this shifting computer? There is a chip or some kind of programmer for sale in summit for $30 that disables the computer but I just want to check and see if there is any cheaper way to do it before I pay $30 for the programmer. Thanks

I have this trans in my SS. I have read up a bit and buying the chip appears to be the only way to change it. However, you can shift at a lower or higher RPM and avoid the "skip shift" function.

Im not trying to be picky or anything but what rpm range does this skip shift work in?

There is a thing called a CAGS defeat, or iCAGS (interrupt Computer Assisted Gear Shift). Some dealers sell it. Ecklers catelog (for the vette) has it. Look around, you will find it. It costs about $25-$30 bucks and takes fifteen minutes to install: crawl under the car (that's 13 of the 15 minutes). Unplug the CAGS connector to the trans. (instructions explain where it is). Insert one end of the iCAGS, into plug that the wire that had been plugged into, then plug the wire into the other end of the CAGS. the engine computer now thinks everything is fine but the car shifts like it should, no 1st to 4th BS.

this is the very first thing I did to my '98 Camaro. I bought the iCAGS from the dealer at the time i bought the car. The dealer would not install it (said it was illegal for them to do that), but the parts department darried the iCAGS kit and the dealer gave it to me at no charge - I negotiatied it with the purchase.

Thanks Lee, it sounds fairly simple to do. Ill have to see if I can order it out of one of these catalogs or drop by the dealer and see if they carry it. Thanks
