i dont believe they mean anything, just what they assign to the engine

but whammer might be correct

LT stands for Low Times (in ets at the drag strip)

its actually true, LTs can hot lap all day long, LSs have to stop and cool down their light weight aluminum block

i'm guessing it just states the gen of the block. no coding for gen I, LT for gen II, LS for gen III

they are arbitrary and just denote the specific motor type.

ls1 is 346 350hp
ls6 is a 346ci 400hp
ls2 is a 6.0 400hp
ls3 is a 6.2 425hp
no real rhyme nor reason

some of the motor codes were used back in the muscle car era before EFI. the lt1, for example was used awhile ago.

the original lt1 was used in 70-72 in the corvette and camaro z28.the original ls6 was a 454 big block.

the ls2 is a 364 cubic inch engine
