December 2009 ROTM Winner - cbr600rx7
cbr600rx7 -
Well first off i would like to say thanks for every one that voted for the old girl this month. My hats off to Chevelle Man and Y2K for one heck of a run with three very cool rides. Next i would like to thank my super hot beautiful wife Alycia being so supported of a very costly and demanding hobby. I have to send a shout out to spec for helping me out from time to time when i first came to the forum back in early 2006. Also i would like to thank all the guys at RPM in NC for all their time and hard work tracking down parts and taking on a very difficult and long project.
This car has been a dream of mine since i was about 5 years old and i went to the Pontiac dealership with my mom when she purchased her 89 firebird off the lot new. Since then i have owned a few of my own (79 camaro, 88 Formula, 84 camaro, 99 3.8 firebird, and of course the TA) I fell in love with hot roding after my grandfather Edsle Gallimore.
Now for a little about the car. Well first off its been one hell of a project that started off just by luck. I had just purchased a turbocharged mazda speed protege from a mazda dealer and was working on my 79 project when i ran accross a negelected mid milage WS6. The car had some over heating issues, a bad exhaust squeak, nearly no brakes, major wiring issue's, and had been neglected inside and out. To say the least she was just a few clicks short of the choping block. Well i fell in love and had no choice but to save the old girl. I sold my 79 and started repairs on the WS6. What started out with just a exhaust, lid, and K&N filter soon became a much larger project. For 2007 the car mostly under went small changes cleaning up the inside and fixing the mechanical issue's that needed to be addressed. By late 2007 the car was bolted and running a baby wet shot of nitrous and had her first big kill a mid 90s lambo (low 13 second car). On Jan 18th of 2008 i left for a 15 month deployment to iraq with some mild plans in my head. I planed to return home with a Head/Cam package TA and maybe a few other small goodies. That idea quickly turned into a magnascharger project then into a turbo project. Jason, Billy, and Ryan at RPM took on the task of gathering a ton of misc parts that would be needed to make this project work. From start to finish it took just under a year. the turbo kit and swap out the stock 4L60 and 10 bolt for a built RPM Transmission stage 5 4L60 and a mosor 12 bolt. For 2009 we made a few small changes by shortning the exhaust, adding alky control, and adding a small dry shot of nitrous as a anti lag.
Now for the future . I have kicked around many ideas but you can bet there will be some good forged parts going into the bottom end as well as some bigger numbers to put down. By 2011 i plan to see the car into the mid 10s still on 93 octane, on DR's, and still daily driver friendly .
Once again thanks to every one that voted and all the new members to camaro forums. I am looking forward to the new year and hope to see every back for 2010 .
