Hello from a 77 owner
Hi all, just thought I would make a opening post here. I recently bought a 1977 LT, a car that I have searched for, for many years in this condition. My first Camaro in 20 years. I have owned 3 others before, back in the 80's, but sadly I was too young and dumb to truly own them. Many years and a few kids later, my bank account never allowed me to do this. Now I'm in my 40's and can finally afford to make this dream happen. I always thought back to my last 77, and remember the day I sold it to some idiot who tore it apart and dirt track raced it, destroying it. I regretted the sale and hated him from there on. Could have should have's. And that one was cherry. For the last 5 years, I have looked for another, but all I could find was one I couldn't afford, or too brutalized to do anything with. One day, while doing my weekly Kijiji/Craigslist/ect search, I found her. And only 500 kms away from me. I called the guy, and he told me he's had lots of people looking but generally just guys looking to either steal it, or to tire kick it. I knew what I was looking at, and emailed the guy his asking price of $1500. Without even looking at it. I called my wife and off to Edmonton we went that Friday. Sat morning, loaded up my new pride on the deck and came home.
Since then, not a lot has happened due to the -30 we have been living in, but before I put it away in the garage, I plated it and actually drove it for a couple of days in October. I darn near cried like a baby putting gas in it for the first time.
I did manage to get it in the garage and begin picking it apart, and I can tell this guy loved this car. He actually didn't seem too happy about parting with it, but what can a guy do, life is life and it was time for him to move on. He told me he's owned it for the better part of 20 years. So far, I have found very little rust on it, and mechanically, it's in very good shape.
My idea is to take it back to original, as close as I can get it. Lots of cash into it should help lol.
My biggest issue is the sunroof. I really wish it wasn't there, but it is what it is. I am probably going to roof skin it.
Anyway, it's a great basis for a future great car.
