Default Buying first camaro. Help Appreciated

I have always loved the look of older Camaros! I am now looking to buy one I can put a little time and money into. I’m not super experienced with working on cars but find it very satisfying... so to the main question. I have a few cars around my area that are in my budget: 1995 3.4- 110k miles asking about 900 dollars or 1997 3.8- 113k asking about 1700. 95 has very clean interior but needs paint 6/10. 97 interior isn’t as clean(needs headliner) but has better paint job. Which one y’all thinking ?

100% the 3800. More power better fuel mileage and less discontinued parts. But with any none warrantied car you should have it checked by a mechanic. Spend the $50. If it finds it got a blown head gasket or the transmission is on its last leg move to the next one.

Weather is a 3.4 of a 3800 you need to get underneath it. If the T-tops have ever leaked it could need floors. In some cases the floor rust will spread to the frame. Course a mechanic will put the car on a lift and check that.

Thanks for input. Is the engine that much better ? People say 3800 can be bullet proof. I’m hoping it lasts at least another 100k plus . Was leaning toward 3.4 because it gives me a little more wiggle room to clean it up, but I don’t really need two... or maybe for the right price I do ha.

Any other recomendat on what to look for ?
All insight is a blessing .

The only weak spot on the engine is the intake gasket. If it never been done just plan on doing it. When they fail there is a 50% chance they will wipe out the motor.

No matter how great an engine design is on 15-20 year old how its been maintained is as or more important then the design.
