Z28 Died on me
Several weeks back I was driving my Z28 around. I was pulling away from a stop light, not aggressive acceleration or anything. It hesitated, then flat out died on me. I pulled over in a parking lot and was able to get the engine to catch for a few seconds before dying again. I saw a little smoke coming from the throttle body. It would not start up after that. I checked the oil and it doesn't have any coolant or metal shavings in. The coolant level has not dropped at all since sitting or the time of the dying. I can't afford to tow it to a shop and then pay them to diagnosis it. I have a sneaking suspicion it is the distributor. When I had been troubleshooting a previous coolant leak, coolant and water had been dripping all over the dist. The engine will turn over if I hit the ignition, but it won't catch. I am planning on doing a compression test. Anyway to know the timing chain didn't break or jump?
Totally sounds like it is ignition related. Especially since you saw the t-body burp some smoke. That is a good indication of an ignition/timing issue- which your opti is responsible for. Check for spark and fuel pressure to the rail- both easy to do and go from there. The timing chain is very strong on these engines and a failure is extremely rare. Since you said that coolant got in that area I would go with craby and suspect a pissed opti. Good luck
Update! I got my new opti installed and it is still not starting up. I tested to make sure I am getting spark and I can hear the fuel pump engaging when the key is turned forward. I am assuming there is only one way that opti can go on because of the keyed dowel. Any suggestions at this point?
I rented some noid lights from Autozone and hooked up the one to an injector harness...and nothing. No lights blinked. I tried it on another harness and the same thing. My battery is dying from the past weeks of me turning it over, but I should still see a light. Is there a fuse or a relay that I should check that might cause this?
u are going to need to check to see if there is juice getting to the fuses. im seeing in the book it could be pass key decoder modual. are u setting a trouble code 46?
