u dont want slag to get in there. it would be a good idea to take the cover off to weld. why not just leave the gear in there?

Why not just leave the shaft driven pump in place? Why do you want to go with a riskier electric pump setup anyway?

I would keep the gear in, when that electric pump goes out you will have the option to go back to manual if you have a change of heart. But if you are sure, Don't Weld it. Get a Shop to turn a press fit plug for it, or get a piece of aluminum and aluminum soldering rods from
Home Depot and solder a plug in. Welding could warp and distort the cover, causing the other seal holes to be out of position and leak oil later around the seals. I have done this to a tranny in a Saturn and it's still holding just fine, this method does not cause warpage from weld shrinkage. You will need more heat than a standard propane torch, get a hot one 800 deg min.

i put a deep socket that was just a little bigger than the shaft on the shaft so i could hold it straight and then taped it in with a small hammer to get it started. then i started the bolts to the retainer. i tightened the retainer bolts a little then tapped on the shaft a little, repeting until the bolts were tight and i could see the retainer was against the block. then i tapped the socket a couple times to make sure the bearing was set in all the way. u may want put a new bearing on there being u have it out. should have one at the local bearing shop.
