I have a 94 Z28 automatic with 196,000 miles [:@] The engine is original but the transmission was replaced about 50,000 miles ago.

Problem: Recently, after letting the car sit for four days, I started her up, let it warm for about 10 minutes, and took off down the road. When I took off I hit 4500 rpm in first gear and then noticed that the transmission did not immediately shift to second. I let off the gas and then after a second or two the car dropped into second. It was at this point that I noticed the speedometer didn't work at all. When I came to a stop sign, I could tell that the transmission had not switched back into first gear because there was very little pull when I let off the brake. The transmission stayed in 2nd gear for the rest of the drive back to the house. When I put it in park and then drive and started going again, it was back in first and would not shift to second. I decided not to gun it to 4500 to see if it would shift like before.

Question: What is wrong with my car? I don't think it makes since to spend ~$2000 replacing a transmission on a car that is worth ~$3000. I had a mechanic a while back tell me that the vacuum lines looked old and cracked and that I would have some kind of problem shifting when they failed. Could this be the issue? How difficult would it be to replace a transmission?

The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) does not seem to be working. Either a problem with the VSS itselsf, or in the wiring connecting it to the PCM. Locates on transmission tailshaft.

 

isntthe 94 camrao fuel injected? so why are you warmingit up for so long?

 

Yes the '94 is fuel injected, why would it be carbed? Anyway, the car is always happier running when it's warmer, and for those of us who live in colder climates in the winter, it takes some time for them to warm up and get the oil and all other fluids to a better viscosity for driving.
