gota take the belt off, drain the cooling system, take the water pump off, take the opti off, take the balancer off, losen the bolts on the oil pan, take the front oil pan bolts out so the front will drop, take the front cover off. if i didnt drop the pan a bit i couldnt get the dang thing to seal, taking the cover out and trying to squeeze it back in wouldnt work for me.

is the engine on a stand or in the car?

If in the car, and you want the cover all of the way off, then you also need to pull the hub, lift the engine a little (since you are loosening the oil pan then a hoist is best) and what craby says covers it. You will end up tearing apart the gasket. If you also want to replace the oil pan gasket it can be done. I will now install my flame suit.

Simply snip the gasket on the middle of the drivers side, work the gasket around and rtv where you made the snip....it won't leak.
