i had just pulled in to my house and when i was getting out i noticed a smell. i looked out of the car and saw a grayish white smoke coming out from behind the front driver side tire. it came out in the front and rear of the tire. i lifted the hood and nothing came out from the engine. it almost smelled like hot brakes, but none of the brakes smelled like they were burning. it did not smell like antifreeze and when i started the car back up, the smoking ceased. but as soon as i shut it back off, it started smoking again. any info or suggestions are appreciated thanks

May be water dripping on hot exhaust pipes, or possibly a leak in the AC plumbing. Feel the hub of the wheel for excessive heat. Try to pinpoint the source of the smoke to get a better idea.

ok i looked and what i think i saw is an oil leak. i do not know where it was coming from.. looked to be right behind the oilpan. it seems to only leak when driven hard and shut off. it does not leak when the engine is running. is there any gaskets or seals i should check first? also will it be ok to run if i keep watching the pressure guage and keep an eye on the oil level? and thanks for the reply pete

Before you go through all the work replacing the rear seal, check for the notorious LT1 oil leak at the rear of the engine between the intake manifold and the top of the engine block. Run your habd between the rear of the intake manifold where it meets the block, if you find the area oily, that is where your leak is. This leak is often confused for a ream main seal leak because the oil winds up dripping on the same spot.

lol good point. but i jst looked a lttle closer. i dabbed the puddle under the car with a paper towel and checked my oil level. they were different colors. i think im looking at a tranny fluid leak. im guessing its a leak from the transmission pan, or i pinched something replacing my starter the other day.. sorry to bother i shouldve checked it more thoroughly before i posted any more advice is appreciated thanks
