Default rear end gears

hey guys...i got a 97 ss and the rear end is starting to make noise and has to be fixed. i figure while i'm in there i might as well change the gears since i'll be doing performance upgrades later on. i know that most of you say for an automatic(which mine is) to go with 3:73 gears. i told a few of the mechanics around here that and they seem to think that that would make my car a pretty harsh ride and would rev too high on the interstate. they said i'd probably be happier with a 3:42. what do you guys think? i like to drive my car and don't want to make it uncomfortable

It depends on what you want if your going for just a lot of highway driving stick with a higher gear...if you want performance go with a lower gear
