operating temperature
Hello all. I just bought a 96 Z28 with 84000 miles. I've only had it for one day, but I'm concerned about the temperature at which the engine is running. At cruising speed the temp guage reads between 210 and 235 (about the 3/4 mark); it also seems to run cooler when the car is not moving. I have read that these temperatures are normal - that the later LT1's are supposed to run hot, but I'm still not convinced. What do you guys say.

RE: operating temperature
The car should be running cooler at highway speed than at idle.
How it should run:
Thermostat opens at 185 deg, The car should be at this temp while highway cruising.
Fans come on at low speed at 225 deg.
Fans go to high speed at 232 deg.
Fans go on whenever AC is on
Some things to check:
1) All air should be bled out of cooling system.
2) Is the air dam under radiator still in place. They get ripped off when parking over curbs.
3) Radiator free of obstructions.
4) With engine cold, remove radiator cap, coolant should be up to top.
5) Check coolant level in reservoir.
6) Check condition of water pump, no leaks, especially at weep hole.
7) Check for partailly clogged radiator. You may want to put in a new one if car has high mileage
8) Make sure fans are pulling air through the radiator. The are cases of improper wiring where the fans turn in the wrong directionand blowing air towards the front of the car.
9) Make sure you have a 50% antifreeze mix to prevent boil overs.

RE: operating temperature
I had a similar problem with my LT1 last year. The temp gauge read high and would trigger the check gauges light. The problem was the temp sender. If you don't believe the car is actually overheating,it is an inexpensive part to replace and may be the cause of the problem.......JohnJr
