To be quite honest, if you can drive, the only Mustang that you need to be worried about is one that's supercharged.

Sounds like you guys are doing this on the street? Take it to the dragstrip, absolutely roast the street tires get them as hot as possible, when you launch try around 3000 rpms and if it holds well move up, powershift into third and forth even second if you can feather the throttle to keep the spinning down. You should turn some good times but experience is everything, you have to be comfortable with your car. When the tree lights up the last yellow light go ahead and come out that will cut down the reaction time. The more aggressive you drive the car the faster it will go, try to break something, drive it harder than anyone else ever has...its a chevy thats what its made to do. The foxbodies are pretty strong usually 225hp 300tq and they are relatively lightweight 3200lbs. 7 tenths of a hp per pound. the camaro has 8 tenths per pound the torque is similar so all things said you should have beaten a stock foxbody. They have been around for so long that it is actually hard to find a foxbody that hasnt been tampered with but you would need to know what to look for, can you distinguish the sound of a cam from a loud exhaust?
