Default ignition coil

Hey guys, I bought an msd coil and i was wondering if the box is really necessary for proper function. i can connect the coil by itself but im not sure if i should leave it like that. my car is a 95 z28. thanks

what box? are you talking about the ignition modual that the coil hooks to. if so yes its a very good idea to install the coil using the adapter bars.

im talking about these msd boxes that are supposed to be connected to the coil. its not exact one but its close. MSD Ignition 6201 - MSD Digital 6A Ignition Controllers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

oh ok, no you dont need the box and can hook up the coil.

Those boxes just give you 2 or 3 high voltage pulses per cycle instead of the 1 that the stock units provide. The newer 6AL units can even assist in some timing adjustments as well as a rev limiter for racing applications. The coils that MSD make are supposed to work just fine for factory applications but they have a higher refresh rate than the factory coils do so they have a faster response. (basically in laimmans terms they fire faster).
