Pfft. I see how it is...You two with your built first gens and ls1s....You think you're better than us lt1 guys! :P [8D]hahaha

ANYWAY. On to the update.

Yesterday I had my oil changed, coolant system flushed, new thermostat put in, and what do ya know? My temp gauge is reading correctly! It was about 9*F out last night, and I took her for a drive to see if the thermostat actually was the problem. It got up to 180 for about a second, then dropped a tiny bit. I'd say it was sitting steady at 178. Thank goodness it's not running like a weirdo. haha

Now that I'm sure it's in semi-perfect running order, it's time to get those headers...

I slapped in a new 180 when i replaced my opti and water pump. As long as I'm rolling, she sits right around 180. As for damage done by running cool.....go to the track some time and watch the folks that ice down the engine in between runs. Heat is the enemy.

there is a slight difference though. you dont want to go start your car up from ambient and just start railing on it. without thinking about it too hard I would assume its mostly because of metal expansion and oil viscosity. metal components can potentially exeed tolerances when cold due to "shrinkage" (and we all hate shrinkage right guys?) and the oil is much thicker. alot of guys at the track run hard and start to OVERheat, so they ice it to get back to normal operating temps. some may even run without an accessory belt and therefore no water pump

Well it's good that you got everything sorted out and it wasn't an expensive venture!

And I'm going to agree with Spec here, although I don't think that running the car at 140 is going to damage anything, I know when I go to the track I make a pass, pull back into the staging lanes and shut the car off and pop the hood. Stuff gets pretty hot. Also, a lot of the guys that are icing their motor are just trying to ice the intake to get a cooler intake charge when they make their pass. They're the guys that are looking to get ever last .01 out of their car.

Yeah, I'm glad it wasn't anything expensive. But there's a plethora of new sounds being emitted this winter, I'm thinking my plans for a top end upgrade/rebuild/etc. might be coming a bit sooner than expected, and I'm thinking it's gonna cost a bit more too. Oh well, I never expected this hobby to be cheap. :P
