what's the difference between a hypertech programmer that you order for a 1994 lt1 as opposed to any other year? Will they work for different years or is it only for the year specified by the VIN? Also can they be vin locked?

They have to work with the hardware and software that is in that particular car. At the end the results are the same. They only program one car at the time. To use it to reprogram another car the last car programmed has to be set back to stock using the programmer. This will release the lock and allow it to be used on another car. Be careful if you buy these things used, as they may be locked and leave you with a useless piece of plastic.

ok, so if the connection is the same and the previous car settings have been set back to stock then i should be ok, even if the programmer was originally for a '95 or '96 instead of my '94. Will it work?

You may be able to use it on the 94 & 95, but the 96 has a different computer.
