Is this important? Can't you put a breather on the valve cover and block the other end off?

 

You need the hose to suck the fumes out of the engine and keep it from getting sludged up. A breather will relieve the pressure, butwill not purge the crankcase of fumes. Breathers are OK on racing engines, but on the long run create problems on street engines.
