What do you mean by "gears"? Are you refering to purchasing new gears to go into your transmission so you can adjust the gear ratio's there, or are you refering to the final gear in the differental?

Well, you really don't get more "power" but by changing the gears in the differental to 3:73's or 4:10's you can get your revs up faster, and make a better 1/4 mile time, providing you can get traction.

if you're asking this, you don't need to be doing it yourself. changing them is easy (with proper tools and a little mechanical inclination). setting them up properly is the hard part. if you have someone else do it for you (i.e. a shop), be careful you don't go too low gear on an otherwise stock car.

If it isa street car 3.75 for auto or 4.11 for 6 speed. Anything over that can get annoyng after a while and really kills the fuel mileage.
