Default check guages issue

i posted a thread a lil while back, my '94 z28 was running alright then one day the engine shut off while i was driving, the check gauges light came on, and the car wouldnt start back up until the next day. it continued to have issues with starting and then would run ok for a couple days, then the same thing happened again. i had my cat. gutted, and one of my valve covers is leaking a bit im wondering if either of these things could be the issue? any suggestions?

What gauge on the dash is not showing normal? How is the oil pressure? Normally, neither would cause a problem unless your valve cover is leaking bad enough that it leaked out all the oil and your oil pressure is in the red.

the check gages light means u should look at the gages. what are your gages reading and are any in the red? are they all working? should have the car scanned for trouble codes and see if u can get a hint on whats going on.

oil pressure and the battery gauges have always moved around a lot as im driving. but neither are in the red, im once the valve covers are replaced, the oil gauge will stop moving but im not sure because ive had that car a year or so and it has always done that

Your check gauges light went on because the engine quit and the key was in the "on" position. With the engine off, turn your ignition key to the on position, not the run position, and you'll see the light. Nothing's wrong with the gauges or the light, but something (one of many possible things) is making the engine stall out.

fuel pressure is normal. and im not so sure about it just being the light coming on because of the key position because when the key is in the on position, every other light on the dash is on too and the check gauges goes off, but in this case all the other dash lights arent staying on, just the check gauges. and i havent scanned it yet, gonna try to do that tomorrow, we will see how that goes...

Trust me, the check gauges light went on because the engine killed. When you first turn the key on, all the diagnostic lights go on, then some go off. When you start the engine, the rest of the lights go off, or should anyway. When you're driving and the engine kills, your computer still thinks the engine should be running (because the key is still in the "run" position). So, it throws the check gauges light on to make you look to see what's wrong. Some older cars used to have an "engine" light (image of an engine) that would light up if it killed. And even older (non-computerized) cars have a "gen" (generator) light go on if it killed.
