Default 95 Z28 - REAR AXLE/GEARS Question

I have a 1995 Z28, exhaust and intake installed. Im lookin to up the performance, but Im not sure what to look into next. Ive heard that having the gears changed or replacing/rebuilding the rear would be a good place to start, but the only thing is that to have new rear installed is a lot of money, Im wondering if it's sensible or even possible to have the gears (stock 2.72) changed without replacing or modifying the rear. Another factor is positraction, how do I go about finding out if the rear has "true posi"?

You can change just the gears and not the housing, if that's what you're asking. You're looking at about $180 for master overhaul kit, and $300-$500 for new gears depending on Vendor and ratio. I'd have to check, but I think in order to go from the 2.73's down to say 3.73's you may have to change carriers, you may be able to do 3.42's w/o having to do a carrier. To check for posi jack the rear up, with the car in park try to turn one rear wheel. If the opposite wheel rotates opposite the wheel you're turning, then you have an open diff. If it tries to rotate the same direction then you have a posi.

The gears have a spacer made to ring gear to make up the differance of a smaller pinion you can go up from a 2.73 to 3.73 but not 3.73 to 2.73 without a carrier swap. I build these regularly. [8D]
