Default 94 z28 no start

I posted the other day that I was able to start the engine after head gasket had been replaced. Let it run for about 10 minutes or so and shut it down because the temp was up at the 3/4 mark. After shutting it down, it cranks over but will not start. I think I have it figured out. Its something under the hood! LOL.

Today, After trying to start the engine, I removed the number one plug and it was dry. Fuel pump can be heard running. Disconnected the fuel line and with key on, fuel is flowing. I am assuming that the plug should be wet if the injector is spraying fuel into the cylinders. Plugs are new.

Grounded plug to engine and had someone crank it over, no spark either.

I am a little confused as to where to start trouble shooting and am not really sure about what type OBD system the 94 has nor if my OBDII scanner will work on that system.

Should I start with the no spark issue first or fuel? All fuses are good both inside and under hood. Or could it be the PCM?

Right now, I am thinking possible coil, opti for spark and fuel pressure reg on the fuel.

Thanks,
osduck5

Opti... miserable little ... Ok I know this is supposed to be a "G" rated board. I would start there. Make sure it is triggering the coil.

Massey, I'm new to working on the LT1's, so when you say opti, are you talking about the cap and rotor only or something more?

Bump! Anyone? When people say they are replacing the opti, are they replacing the entire distributor or cap and rotor or the term Opti all inclusive of the cap and rotor? I am finding to many variations and prices on the net.

The reason you see no fuel on the plugs is that if the engine does not start within 2 seconds, the PCM shuts down the fuel to prevent flooding.
All 94s are OBDI and most have an OBDI style connector, but some cars built at the end of the model year came through with OBDI PCM and an OBDII diagnostic connector.
Just replacing the cap and rotor an an optispark is usually a waste of time, the entire distributor should be replaced.

If you do replace the whole opti, don't get one of those cheap one's from ebay. Spend a few bucks and get a genuine GM or Delphi unit.

I was looking at MSD, they are about $250 and the GM is pushing $500, but I think with the MSD, I still have to buy the rotor and cap for another $170 or so.

msd should be in the 450 to 500$ range. gm performance should be in the 400$ range. have you had it scanned for trouble codes yet.

shoot

with spark tester

do you have a spark coming from the coil?

if yes, do you have a spark from the plugs?

If no.....................guess what, it's opti time

And before you put it on, open it up and tighten the rotor to avoid having it come undone after a few days and leaving you stranded and having to replace it all over again. QA these days is pathetic and yes, even with MSD. Just because you pay for a name doesn't mean the quality is any better.
