Post 94 LT1 into 96Z

I have been on this sight off and on for a few years now and have gained some solid information. Thanks guys! NEED HELP PLEASE.... I have a 94 z with a blown transmission and a 96z with a bad motor. Im wanting to take the LT1 (OBD1) from the 94 and put it in the 96z (OBD2). What do I gotta do to make it work without having a check engine light on?

is it possible to install 96 knock sensor and have the crank position programmed out of the pcm?would that effect performance?

im pretty sure the knock sensors are the same and i may be wrong (i had a 94 Z) but there is no crank sensor just a cam sensor built into the opti.

Starting in 96 (OBDII) the LT1 had a crank sensor added in the timing chain cover. Since the 96 opti is the same as the previous year without a crank sensor, I see no reason why the engine won't run. As far as I'm aware, the crank sensor was added for OBDII reasons to detect misfires, not for allowing the engine to run. 94 is the old style opti though, but the difference between the two is a mounting/drive design difference.

i think it will work but you will have a ses light all the time and will run in open loop all the time which will cause it to run rich. you can get away without changing cam by drilling out the center hole in the cam so the new style opti will fit, otherwise you will need a different cam, (you may want to do chain) cam gear, front cover with crank sensor, seals and gaskets for front cover, new style opti, crank sensor, you should do a new pan gasket and front and rear main seals. look at the shape of the cooling system and consider changing the soft plugs.
