You can still use the same rear and just get the gears changed, but between parts and labor you are stlill looking close to $1000.

I was told I needed a larger (stronger) carrier . something about the pinion being to small in a 7.5 rear to handle the torque.. I bought the car to race eventually atleast..

just spend $150 on a good rear end girdle. if and whenyou do wad it up, replace the whole thing. you're gonna have to replace the carrier anyway if you're going from stock to 4.11:1. the gears won't mesh properly if you try to put a 4 series ring gear on a 3 series carrier, if it will even bolt up.

You will need a different carrier or an adapter ring, which I am not too keen on.

So is the best way to put 4.11 gears in a stock rear end just to replace it with a new one?

You don't have to change the whole housing. Just the ring and pinion gears, and the differential carrier, that is the part that the ring gear gets bolted to. Plus all other various small parts to finish the job. An entire axle with 4.11 gears won't be asy to find.

ask yourself what kind of power you ultimately want to put to that rear end, and make your decision based on that answer.
