You can probably bore and stroke it up. You can stroke them out to 383 with a 400 crank, so if you bore it over you can probably get up to 396...don't cite this as fact or anything, but it seems plausible.

a freind of mine owned a daily drivin LT1 that was 396 cu. in. he bought a complete kit to do it. used a Eagle crank and rods with JE pistons. here is the same basic kit http://racingjunk.com/post/432403/SM...-NEW-FORG.html
396 LT1s are available, they use a crank with a 3.875" sroke compared to 3.75"stroke for the 383, and 3.48" stroke for the 350 versions.
