Default 1978 350 motor in a 1998

will a 1978 350 fit in a 1998 camaro? Also if it was a v6 camaro would it need any upgrades.

It most likely will fit if you want to chop up the cowl and the hood, but mating the '98 Camaro electronics to a small block Chevy that was not designed for them, could be an interesting challenge. This is the reason that the LT1 was developed. Seems to me you are taking a backwards step.

I agree with Pete, that bulky HEI distribuitor won't fit under the cowl. If you need to pass emissions test where you live, the '78 engine in the newer car will fail. If you were installing the newer engine in a '78 chasis, you could pass if you kept all emissions systems as they were when new to comply as a '98 engine.

You can get an LT1 or LS1 at junkyards and engine vendors, and you know for sure it fits. I think the V6 crossmember is different, but check around I'm not sure.

Unless this is a built 350 u will definitely be taking a step back! An LT1 or LS1 would definitely be more fit for the newer vehicle.
