Default Yikes Help!? rearend...?

My 98 z28 has been making a ton of whining while driving around 56-64 mph it calms down a little after that point but it whines really loud in the car and only when i give it gas if i let off it quiets down... I also noticed that while i was on ice and i had ASR off the rear end whined while i gave it gas and the left tire did not spin, i do have a posi unit in the rear end so what needs replacing?! The posi works on cement though, when its clear of ice i have let the motor rip and both tires go spinning leaving two tread marks..???? any information is appreciated!
THANKS

The only thing i can relate it to is before i had a 96 camaro, it would whine really loud from 0-25 and it turned out to be a hanger bearing that needed lube bad, but this is alot worse, its LOUD and if you open the door and get close to the rear end it basically whines so loud it could hurt your ear, only when i'm on ICE though, the posi doesn't hook up, or when i'm driving the interstate it gets really loud around the previous mentioned speed... The car was in a wreck before i bought it and the rear end took some damage, i had to replace a few bars in the back to pull the axle shaft back into place, is there anyway the gears could have gotten wrecked?

If this is a stock 10 bolt then forget about it. Its 12 bolt or 9 inch time. Dont waste your money replacing the 10 bolt unless you are prepared for it to fail again. If you do decide to replace it with another 10 PM me. I have the stocker out of my TA collecting dust.

I would be interested but, i just came across even worse problems in a matter of hours tonight, it seems like the 4l60e has taken a crap on me, i went to get some cash from an ATM parked the car ran in got cash came out and now i don't have reverse, 2nd gear or 4th. Sun Gear Shell must have failed some how.. i'm 252 miles away from the local tranny shop which will cut me a great deal, i have very little money, and it sounds like this requires a complete rebuild... i did research and thats how i linked it to the sun gear shell a common problem in the 4l60e i guess.. SAD GM couldn't actually build something more reliable, makes our country look more and more pathetic considering Honda "never has transmission trouble" thats just a quote from a big honda fanboy i know.
So much for buying a wrecked z28.. one problem after another. still love the car.. just sad i can't drive it

If it's a loud whirring noise from the Diff., then you probably need new bearings... I just had mine replaced in my '02 this week -- I saw the worn parts -- bearings were all pitted. It's good to have an extended warranty... ;-)

Yeah I'm having the tranny rebuilt right now... So did you have the axle bearings replaced by someone if you don't mind how much was it? If you DIY, how long did it take aswell was it difficult or something I could probably do myself??
I appreciate the responses!

Since you're still rolling on a stocker rear end, it really wouldn't be worth replacing anything, considering you can buy a used one for about 150 to 200 bucks... Save your pennies for a 12 bolt.
