Default SS hood scoop question

This might be a dumb question but on the 98-2002 SS models does the hood scoop give an advantage? Like at high speeds is more air forced in creating more power ? If not then are there any advantages to having a hood scoop othen than cosmetic?

No it is really just a cosmetic thing, although there are some that will argue this. In theory the scoop might add a couple of hp at speeds over 100 mph but you will never notice it.

so its cosmetic? is there no opening under the scoop to let air into the engine? if not should i make a hole or something becuase i live in Kuwait and its super hot here so some ventilation might help?

theres a hole there...air will get through...i'm seriously considering buying a cold air intake and throwing it on just to see if i notice a difference between the ram air and CAI

In normal driving conditions there won't be. At the 1/4 mile there won't be, you don't achieve fast enough speeds for it to become effective (If our buddy Paz had anything to say about this he would say that it never works...LIES!). At top speed there may be a slight difference, but probably not too much. On the LT1 the big advantage of the SS intake is it is much less restrictive (if you have seen a stock Z28 intake it's the most retarded intake ever built by GM...honestly).

From everything that I've seen, you don't get any advantage with it until 75-80 MPH.

wham, I did have a SLP CIA and the SS hood/air box was better than that on my car at least. It felt like it was getting more air and faster. I don't know, each person seems to have their own opinion on it. But the 96-97 SS models had 20 more HP than the Z28, so...

I thought the RA acted as a CAI.

well it is, it does take in colder air, but you'll also here people say that it doesn't work because the whole airbox is sitting on top of the engine and gets heat soaked. But I say that as fast as the air is coming in and getting used, it's not going to pick up that much heat if any from that. It's pretty protected and made from plastic, so the air box itself will not conduct or store heat. I've had mine running until it gets hot, just sitting, and pop the hood and it wasn't hot to the touch, so... I think the whole design is better than any CIA out there. The thing is that you can't prove that it works or not on a dyno because you don't have the forced air effect while dyno'ng, where as a CIA can show inprovement just in flow, not necessary in colder air.
