Default safe rev limit with new cam

ok so im in the process of getting a new cam set up for my ls1, prob something like a 296/296 with 0.650 inch lift (maybe bigger), anyhow, i really want to get the most out of it at the top end of the revs and wanted to know how much i could raise the limited to, i was thinking ~7500 rpm, with stock bottom but new cam, push rods, values springs and followers, however i dont know if the crank and con rods will be upto this stress. any ideas??

WOW. Once you get into the 24X/25X range you are talking about an out ranges cam. I run a 228/232 and that is considered a some what aggressive street cam.

For your rev limit it depends on the year of the car. I think it is the Pre 2000 LS1 cars that have the weaker rod bolts. Regardless of the year you will need to beef up your rod bolts if you plan on going any wear close to 6,800. With good rod bolts 7,000 is not unheard of but you are starting to push it. The highest i have heard of on stock bottom is 7,200 and i would not recommend trying it unless you have the money and time to replace it if it brakes lose.

A lot would come down to the tune and your cam/spring combo.

You will not be able to touch 7,500 with a stock bottom or at least not more then once. Do a little more research on your cams or post up what you are looking for. Some times bigger is not better in some cases. In fact a more mild cam is normal better on the street due to a stronger mid range torque curve and would be far more enjoyable.

You will need a good tune and you should have a lid, headers, and good y-pipe to back it up. Once you install the cam you will also need good valve springs.

ok, so i found a cam im wanting. Something such as 232/234 and 0.600/0.600 ish lift with lsa ~112-114.

Does anyone know how the mix of duration and lift works. i think a bigger lift and smaller duration is top rev range, but longer duration with milder lift is more low to mid range. Is this right guys?

I have CAI, slp lid and K&N, and straight through exhausts after cats (headers are standard at present but getting long tube 1.25" to 3" then 3" back and possible de-cat)

1.25 primaries? o.O

Longer duration = higher end power

You will HAVE to have the car tuned for that cam or your car will run like crap.
