Question about LS1 and LT1
Hey everyone, Im new here and I am currently looking for an LS1 Camaro or Trans Am. Sorry for posting this in the tech section, only one I saw devoted to LS1 motors.
Im trying to get info on the differences between motors. Is the LS1 worth the extra $? I want to make the right decision here and not regret the route i go. I will only be using this car as my daily driver and will probably never go to the track. I want something speedy though. I currently drive a 97 Gt Mustang and its a pretty bogged down car (4.6l V-8 215hp) on the dyno like 189hp.
I am trying to figure out which models of the camaro and trans Am have the LS1 also. I know the SS Camaro and the Ws6 Trans Am have them, but arent there some Z-28's and formula trans am with them? thanks!

Every 4th gen Z28/Trans Am/Formulabetween 93-97 has an LT1 after 98-02 they had the LS1. The LS1 is a good engine, good power for the price, and the trans am looks better than the 98-02 LS1 Camaros imo. Not to mention fuel isnt too bad.
the difference is marketing schemes. the z28, SS, Trans am, firebird formula, ws6, and firehawk from 98 and up ALL had a 350hp ls1. they were rated by chevy as 305hp in the beginning, and the ss's and ws6 got a 320hp rating later on. but this was only to affect sales and to keep the fbodies from stepping on the toes of the corvette, which has the exact same motor. the only difference in the corvette is that it has a reverse mounted tranny and IRS, which results in slightly more parasitic driveline loss so in all actuality the ls1 fbodies will dyno higher than a c5 vette. however the vette is substantially lighter so its still faster.
93-97 were ALL LT1, with the exception of a few special edition LT4 SS's and firehawks. the LT1 makes about 285hp. if money is an issue and you really arent worried too much about speed go with the lt1. its about a 14.0 second car, and is usually a nose ahead of the PI mustang GTs (99-04). the LS1 camaro however is significantly faster. 13.3 with a decent launch in an auto. and you get the added knowledge with the ls1 that any guy who rolls up to you in an 04 or older mustang will need some sort of FI to beat you.
we tend to dyno right at about 300rwhp.

Nice detailed post -- stuff like this should be in a sticky...

275i-285sh for the lt1.20ish hp isnt a big difference, and as previously stated the lt1 and 99-04GT are approx the same in the quarter so where do you come up with that statement? my old mustang walked on LT1's all day, but they didnt have LT's and I had full boltons.

I really don't think we need that stickied...[&:]
As Spec stated, the differences between the different models are mostly in appearance. The WS6 and some SS's got upgraded suspension parts, what it really boils down to is what packages the car was ordered with from the factory. Needless to say all LS1 cars are equally fast, so don't go for the higher priced packages if you're looking for more speed, if you like the way they look it's a different story, but that's for your wallet to decide.
