knocks and pings

RE: knocks and pings
Have you made any mods to the engine? Reprogrammed the computer? Hypertech etc. ? If the engine is dead stock and it knocks, you should get a check engine lite or your knock sensor might have died. If you have a SS, there may be two knock sensors involved. If you have a manual tranny, make sure you are not lugging the engine. If you have an automatic, check that thr TCC disengages when you floor the gas pedal and when you hit the brakes.

RE: knocks and pings
Recently installed Hypertech PP, but it knocked & pinged before. Someone mentioned the knock sensors but shouldn't I get a check engine light? It's an auto and I don't know what a TCC is. The car seems to run great but that noise really gets to me. I'm sure it would run better if not for that noise.

RE: knocks and pings
Sometimes the knock sensor will work loose and not pick up the knock. It will bring up the trouble lite if it loses electrical connections or ground connection or break down internally. It can be loose and still have a good ground, but it won't hear the knock properly. Make it good and tight so it can pick up the noise. There may be one or two, depending on model.
Are you sure you are getting spark knock, and not something mechanical?
The TCC is the torque converter clutch. If it does not disengage when it should, it will cause the engine to lug and possibly ping.

RE: knocks and pings
I am pretty sure all the LS1 motors had two knock sensors, they are located under the intake manifold. You will see wires going to rubber boots, pull back the boots and you see the plugs. You will need two long flat head screw drivers to remove the connectors from the sensors. Use the srcew drivers to squeeze the sides of the connectors and pull up at the same time, after that you will be able to unbolt the sensors and remove them.
