Default Help! Emergency transmission failure!

2002 Z28 Automatic Camaro 167k miles.

Symptoms:
Smoking from rear engine (transmission area)
Metal rattling sound coming from transmission area
Sounds occur in all gears

ENGINE WILL NOT SHUT OFF
When power is cut, engine sounds as if the starter is engaged but worse, as if transmission is engaged and power is not shutting off. Turning switch into on (not start) position starts the engine back up. I had to keep switching the engine in neutral and turn it on/off to get the rattling to stop temporarily and then turn the car completely off.

Please help, there seems to be serious damage to the car and it just came out of nowhere.

Starter stuck engaged? May want to take a look. I seen starters that failed to disengage and wound up spinning fast eneough to spit some of the inside parts out.

double post, im thinking the motor is dieseling from a failing catalytic converter. if you get the chance, when its smoking check the converter and see if its getting red hot. a recording would be a big help.

Sorry, I thought the post didn't go through. The starter was the culprit.
