Exclamation Hello Everyone

Hi everyone,
Yeah another new guy with a lame question. But, I have to ask. I figured I should introduce myself first though so you don't think I'm just some idiot jack wagon who comes some place for a day to ask a question then runs.

My name is Brandon and I am an advid Camaro lover and I curenlty own two of these wonderful cars. I have a 1987 IROC that is currnetly laying in peices for a full rebuild, as of right now it has all new BMR suspention on it and is waiting for a new 350 crate motor and trans. Still needs some body work and what not but it's a great car that my mom gave me before she passed away.

My second Camaro, which brings me to this sight in search of help, is a 2001 V6 car. I bought it just after i got out of tech school for the Air Force and it has treated me well after all this time. Well untill a few days ago anyway.

I told you those stories to tell you this one. My V6 encountered some troubles the other day. I thought that the transmission was going out in it, but after checking the levels and driving it again, it turns out it is shifting fine. So, here is the symptoms and what I have done to root out this problem that eludes me.

The engine has no power. In the low RPM range it moves fine, but anything over 2500 and its dead to the world. I nursed it home so I could take a look at everthing else and read the code it threw out at one point. The code read for a Mass Air Flow, and since the car is 10 years old now, I went ahead and changed it, but I wasn't banking on it fixing anything with it really. I checked the fuel pressure to see if maybe it just wasn't getting enough fuel to suport it at the higher RPM's but I held a steady 40 PSI all the way up to 3800 RPM when the motor just wouldn't spin up any more. My next option was taking off the belt and starting it up to check the pullies and make sure that wasn't what was keeping the motor from spooling up. And once again, no issues. Everything moved freely and while it was running, the motor still had the same issues.

That's as far as I have gotten so far. It's just to dark and to cold to keep working at it right now. I plan on checking the coil packs and looking for a cracked spark plug tomorrow, But I was hopping to see if anyone else has had an issue similar to this and to see what they did to fix it.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to read this and offer any help they can. I hope to get this thing fixed, I would hate to have another parts car.

Thanks everyone!

OK First off welcom to the forums...

I was suprised to hear a V6 question in the LS1 side but that is all good. Do you have any codes? I am going to guess by what you are saying is you have a clogged cat. The symptoms fit. The only other thing I can think of is upstream O2 sensors. Have the car sanned and see if they can scan memory codes as well.

You tricked me! I thought that I was going to read some questions about an LS1, but got questions about a V6 instead.

I have a similar issue with LS1 and the symptoms of your car is very similar to mine, except that my engine is misfiring. The engine might be no good and I might have to replace it. Hopefully your engine fares better than mine.

+1

Take the car to AutoZone, they'll scan it for free and tell you what codes it's throwing. That's a good place to start.

Oh man guys I'm sorry! I didn't realize it was the LS1 side of the house!! I have a Snap-On brick and the codes were reading miss fires in cylinders 3 and 6. It's stinking like rubber now when it gets warmed up and I'm starting to think it is the cat.

I am really sorry about posting in the wrong spot!

Maybe I should read more.

Stinking like rubber? In the engine bay? If so then check the wires I will bet that #6 or #3 have been touching the manifolds and are toast. They both ride on the same coil and fire at the same time so if one goes they both go. If the wires are good and nothing is touching the manifolds or exhaust system then move the #3/6 coil, clear the codes and see if the problem moves.
