A few ?'s
First I know that my car is running rich that is ok its way better than running lean. But the problem is that everytime I give it a little gas and let off it backfires. The same thing happens everytime I shift gears too. Could it be the spark plugs or the wires. If it is what sparkplugs do you suggest and where can I find some better wires for them as well. Another question is what is the size of my differential housing. I think it is a 7.5 with a 10 bolt design am I correct. It is an 02 SS. Thanks for your help.
First you need to fix the richness. Timing or fuel system adjustmens are in order. This is causing your backfires. Wires and plugs can be bought at any local (momandpops prefered) auto parts store.
I recomend denso irridium plugs, but they are like 13.00 bucks each. I also have a set of granatelli 0 resistance plugwires for about 269.00 that have performed great. As for your rear-end Q, I think your right, that's what my 2000 SS has.
The engine in your car is completely computer controlled so unless osmething was molested it should not be running rich. If you have a loud exhaust, popping back into the exhaust when you let off the gas is common. If you having real backfire, popping back into the intake, you have a problem that should be taken care of. If the engine is pretty much stock, I would use the OEM plugs, if it is heavily modded, then you have to experiment with heat ranges and tip design to find one that works best for you.
My motor is stock and I think the backfiring I'm am hearing is my exhaust popping. I am planning on doing some work to my car so I thought aftermarket plugs and wires might help even though it would probably be minimal. So thanks for that tidbit.To clarify I think my car is running rich because when I crank it and it idles for a minute I smell gasoline so I thought that would be causing the backfire. I just got this car so I'm not sure. Thanks for any insight.
Personally I do not run Irridiaum plugs in any performance car, the tip can get really hot and cuase pre-ignition. On a stock car this is not much of a concern but with more compression or nitrous or any type of forced induction they are a BIG no-no. You have a 10 bolt rear end and if it is a 6 speed it has a 3.42 gear ratio.
