Default Engine management light.

Last week I started to have issues with the battery going flat. I thought it might be because I was just making short trips. I charged it fully but it would not really hold a charge. I arranged to go and watch drag racing 150 miles away so drove up their with a starter battery pack to restart on the way back. Drove back this evening 150 miles and was fine until I got back to my brothers house. It felt like it was missing, the engine was revving low, the engine management light come on and then the asr light came on. It smelt very hot and when I lifted the bonnet I could see some smoke like oil dropping onto the exhaust. The gauges weren`t showing that it was hot. Could this be a problem relating to the battery? I thought it might be because I slowed down off the motorway so the car wasn`t getting such a charge from the alternator?

Cheers

Andy
