Default Drive shaft too short?

So ever since i baught the car (aug of last year) whenever i get above 70mph (which i never get up to cause the speed limit is 65) haha. Anyawys when i get up above 70 it sounds like there is something knocking down by my transmission. well after a while of trying different things (u joints and such) i discovered theres only like 1.5 inches inside of the transmission... now this car has had some work done to it that im still trying to figure out everything. but i know it has 4:10 gears and the whole underbody is reinforced, including the brace that goes from the transmission to the rear axle. and you can wiggle the yolk inside the trans so it looks like my drive shaft is too short and i was wondering if anyone knows what the stock length of the drive shaft is supposed to be? thanks

Those are pretty long drive shafts, considering the wheelbase is only about 100 in. When you measure the drive shaft, the weight of the car has to be supported by the wheels, if the rear wheels are hanging in mid-air the slip joint will normally get pulled out of the transmission.

it isnt a clone all of the vins match up and it is a SS and i did this on an alignment rack....so it was at riding height...one thing im thinkin is that the person who had the car before me put a lowering kit on it and i wonder if that effected the driveshaft at all

Since the driveshaft angles down towards the rearend, a lowering kit would push the slip yoke further into the trans tail. If you're suggesting that the slip yoke is pulling out 1.5" as you're driving, it ain't gonna happen.

what i meant was that the stock driveshaft was too long with the lowering kit so they put a shorter shaft on

How far slid out is the slip yoke? A good rule of thumb is it should be pulled out about 1/2" from where it's bottomed out (all the way in).
