Post Desperately need 26055910 - steering coupler

I have searched high and low for a steering column coupler, GM part # 26055910
Anyone know where I can purchase a new one and if not, what options I have to buy a re-manufactured or rebuild mine?
I have a 1999 Camaro SS

Thanks

Post Flaming River

I noticed Flaming River who makes aftermarket steering shafts for many American made muscle cars and trucks. But with GM discontinuing the Camaro 4th Gen LS1 v8 5.7L steering shafts I would think a company like this would profit by offering a substitute to GM's failure with maintaining parts.

I contacted Flaming River and they need dimensions of the steering shaft coupler to possibly make up one, but have no idea how to acquire these dimensions.

Any assistance in these forums?

Yes, but it is used. I am looking for New, Refurbished, or Aftermarket. I already have an original shaft on my car, but needs replacement. It is starting to fail and is loose when turning from one direction to another.

Did they talk to you about what the price would be to make you a one off if you found the dimension? Aftermarket need volume most camaros sitting in junk yards still have these in them. It is not a common failure item. There are companies out there that make custom shafts all the time for hot rods they are going to be able to give you a better prices for the one off then a aftermarket manufacture can.

If the above used shaft does not have clearance in it already it will most likely last another 200K unless you are doing stunt driving. IMO when these shafts fail it is normal due to a wreck or a curb hit or it was not real great to start with (factory defect).

how did you determine that your coupler is failing? best to have someone rock the wheel back and forth while you hold the end closest to the rack with channel locks or vise grips. if the play is in the rack or shaft to the rack i would suspect the rack is failing, more common.

Cool

I went to a local muscle car mechanic and they stated to me the steering shaft was shot and needed to be replaced. They looked over the steering system itself though too because originally I was going to have them replace the rack and pump but they said nothing was wrong with the rack or pump. I have no idea why after 194,000 miles(if it suppose to last 300-400K) it would fail. I do not drag race my car or abuse it. San Diego roads are harsh and have many pot holes....just an idea.

I have contacted every known manufacture known to man online(sent out around 50 emails) and Borgeson may be helping me out. They are asking for pictures. Just wish I had dimensions to send them.
