Default Cold Air Intake?

Should I really invest in a cold air intake kit? Couldn't I just get a K & N air filter and call it a day? I'm wondering because since I already have the air scoop hood, I figured I wouldnt need the cai kit. What do ya'll think?

up to you really. I just use the drop in filter, it does not really give me more HP but it helps me with my MPG. I get about 2MPG more in town and about 3MPG on the freeway. To me that is worth the $50 for the drop in filter. Now I am running a V6 so the HP gain from the CAI is only like 6-10, with a V8 the gain can be almost 15-18 according to the KNN website. BUt that setup is close to $300 or more depending on where you buy.

Haha, a CAI will not get someone gains of 15-18HP, I'd say 8-10HP for an LS1. I would invest one, but not the K&N intake. Its too expensive. Personally, I would go with the Volant or the SLP CAI.

most guys say to go with a new lid. I dont know if there is really any advantage to the hood scoop. you may want to look into an SLP lid and just make the hood non-functional, or if you dont want to do that then just get the filter. Most LS1 guys wont do a full CAI because the intake system isnt very restrictive

Yea the k & n cai is real expensive. SLP lid? I see alot of maro's with this lid, but what advantage does a new lid have?

the stock lid for cars without the ram air intake has baffles and sound dampeners which slow down intake flow. The SLP or whisper lids (for example) remove these and open up the entry way behind the filter.

Im not sure exactly what the ram air setup looks like however. I cant remember if it forgos the air from under the car and all air feeds in from the hood or if it somehow incorporates both.

iirc it is a wash either way.

So I wouldn't regret spending 300 bucks on a SLP Performance FloPac cold air induction system and I'll notice a difference right away? ?

I did a little write up somewhere on the CAI cut out. Basically all you have to buy is the SLP or similar lid and the K&N filter, then do a bit of cutting of the bit the lid sits into and it opens up to the underside of the car so you can see the floor. Personally you dont need to spend the extra $200 to get the metal or plastic bit to direct the are and the scoop under the car does a good enough job

Yea, I just want the lid and the k & n filter but I'm looking at this kit thing that comes with the cold air induction scoop and that's why it's so expensive, I don't really need that, or do I?
