Can LS1 engines run on Regular (87) gas?
Alright I'm looking at a 99 Camaro with ofcourse an LS1, and I was reading on a site they were running on premium gas, but then on another site it said unleaded gas which means I could run regular. The reason Im so concerned is on the news they basically said any engine you run on premium can be run on regular...but I dont wanna seize up the engien or anything if I get a 99 Camaro.
So basically I'm wondering if anyone is running their LS1 on regular.
(I did search but came up with nothing)

You can run them on 87 but it will not run well and will detonate a little untill the computer retards the timing. If you do run 87 in one just don't race or beat on it and you will be fine.

The PCM in the LS1 will reated the timing automatically. Like I said it will ping for a second and then be fine. I have done it on my car in the past, but only for times when I knew I was going to driving a long distance or somthing. If you do it you have to remember not to beat on it or race it.

When I first got my 01 z28, the dealer put 87 in it and it would not stop pinging. As soon as 91 was added, the engine ran fine. I would say paying the extra 20 cents a gallon is worth it on these cars.

This question is more like a cause and effect thing, yes you can us 87 but you'll loose power and of course the ping, super is defenitly the best bet. If you like to get on it from time to time ya you wouldn't want 87 in your tank you could cause some damage. Besides saving the extra 20 cents is not going to buy you an rebuild or even a completly new motor
